Interview with Globalance’s CEO Mark Spetter

This summer I interviewed Mark Spetter, CEO of Globalance, a firm specialized in sustainability. In this video interview Mark and I talk about how sustainability not only helps the environment but helps businesses too. Mark has 10+ years experience in the field of sustainability. He has worked for Rabobank, Dekamarkt and MVO Nederland. We delve into questions like ‘what are the Top 3 most misunderstood issues of sustainability’? ‘How can Information Technology benefit from sustainability’? ‘How can you save money with a sustainable business’? The video interview with Mark has been split up into 5 separate video’s. Here they are: Idealism and sustainability Often sustainability is associated with naive idealism. In this video Mark explains that conducting business in a sustainable way is much more than that. The essence is not idealism but common sense. Another important aspect is sustainable procurement. More and more a must, especially when dealing with local and national government. IT and sustainability Enabling sustainable IT is the topic in this video. Mark talks about the re-use of energy and ‘green’ IT. Datacenters produce large amounts of heat. Instead of just releasing that heat we can build a construction that catches the dissipated energy and stores it for the heating of greenhouses or heating of homes. Saving money with sustainability Too often sustainability in the past was associated with ‘nouvelle vague’. Nowadays sustainability is about money. Saving money and making money. It has become a way to add value to existing businesses and at the same time add value to society by rethinking business processes. Globalance sustainability game The sustainability game was developed by Globalance to help organisations implement sustainable policies. It’s been used by many corporations among others Dutch bank Rabobank and has helped them apply sustainable practices. The 3 biggest misconceptions about sustainability Often people have a misunderstanding of what sustainability is. In this video Mark examines the 3 biggest ones. For example some people think sustainability is all about solar panels and wind turbines. Although these certainly are important elements, sustainability is broader. For example it examines how the relationship of a company is with it’s environment. The goal is to establish a Win-Win situation for both corporations and society.   Want to know more about sustainability and how it can help your organisation? Is your company currently participating in sustainable projects?
